Local Information and News

The Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá'í's of San José is involved in many social activities. Below are some highlights:

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Association of the Santa Clara Valley

The San José Bahá'í Community has been working with the Martin Luther King Jr. Association of Santa Clara Valley, Inc. Members of the Bahá'í Community are active association board members since 1988.

The Association's charter is to organize the birthday celebration of Dr. King and keep the dream of freedom and civil liberty alive for all citizens of the Santa Clara Valley . The birthday celebration consists of a religious night, Mover of Mountain Award and Scholarship Breakfast, and Freedom Train ride.

The Mover of Mountain Award, is presented to those individuals who volunteer their time and have made significant contributions to the welfare of the Santa Clara Valley Community. A symbolic ride from San José together with San Francisco rally is the concluding event of the weekend celebration of Dr. King's birthday and America's Civil Rights Movement.

Core Activities in San Jose

Our Community fosters and participates in four core activities as an essential part to building a new and peaceful world community and to put into practice at the grassroots the following quotation from the Baha'i Writings:

"The betterment of the world can be accomplished through pure and goodly deeds, through commendable and seemly conduct."

Community Service Awards Banquet

In 1996, the San José Bahá'í Community Service Awards Banquet marked its fifteenth year of honoring individuals and organizations who perform service in different fields of human endeavor. The themes selected are based on the teachings of the Bahá'í Faith and most often coincide with the United Nations designated year. Previous Recipients are among the community leaders and organizations.

The theme for the year 2000 was "Education." The award recipients were: Teach For America and Metropolitan Education District. The keynote speaker was Dr. Terry Kneisler, Superintendent of Schools, Philomath, Oregon. The award ceremony was on Saturday, January 29,2000.

The theme for the year 2001 was "Volunteerism." The award recipients were Community Impact and Silicon Valley Habitat for Humanity. The keynote speaker was Judge James F. Nelson, the retired judge of the Los Angeles County Superior Court.

The year 2002 we honored organizations working with "Children." Our award recipients were Child Advocates of SCC and Children Discovery Museum of San Jose . Our keynote speaker was Dr. Dwight W. Allen, Eminent Professor of Educational Reform, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA.

In the year 2003, we honored Hospice of the Valley and Services for Brain Injury. Our keynote speaker was Dr. Alfred Neumann, Professor Emeritus, Department of Community Health Sciences, UCLA School of Public Health.

The Speech Club

Established in 1990, the Santa Clara County Bahá'í Speech Club, teaches young children to recite speeches of high quality on different topics using the Sacred Writings of the Bahá'í Faith and other Holy Writings.

The Bahá'í Family School

A long established inter-community school, the Bahá'í Family School (BFS), runs from September to mid-May. The school's location is the Bahá'í Center located at 945 Willow Street in San José. Classes are held every Sunday from 10:30AM-11:45AM.
