Introductions
From Renett Grove:
Alláh'u'Abhá
As a part of the assignment for the first
week of the wonderful course, here is my introduction.
Thank you for the blessing offered by this course.
My name is Renett Grové and am presently living in Bromhof, Randburg,
Johannesburg. Due to health
challenges it is not possible for me to
attend Community activities and this course gives me the opportunity to deepen
with other Friends. It is my
desire to learn as much as possible so as to
contribute to the beloved Cause through Teaching on the Internet and where ever
opportunities are presented
and also to assist my own spiritual growth.
Knowledge of the Century of Light appears very important as more and more
people one comes into contact
with are asking very challenging questions
relating to the emergence of our beloved Faith and this Book appears to hold
many tools for learning to
respond effectively. All my love to the
Friends who are participating and deep gratitude to the co-ordinator, tutors
and others who have made this
possible

From Phil Christiansen:
Greetings, everyone! At this point I don't know who else will be
in this course, so it's a bit hard to know what to say about myself. I live in
Tshwane (Greater Pretoria), South
Africa. Born in the States, where I
became a Baha'i at university in 1967.
After a stint working at the US
National Baha'i Centre and homefront
pioneering in Canada, our family moved to Kenya in 1980. My wife, Debbie, and I have been in Africa
ever since,
and in Southern Africa from 1985.
I'm very excited about this Century of Light
course, although I'm still a bit nervous about finding the time and discipline
to complete it properly.
But I'm going to try my best. I have read Century of Light once and really
enjoyed it. But that's different than
really studying it. I'm hoping that
the structure of a course and the support of
fellow students will help me gain new spiritual insights and figure out how to
find its "practical help
in sharing with others the challenging
implications of the Revelation brought by Baha'u'llah." I'm also looking forward to my first
experience as
a distance education student. I've studied and thought about distance
education for many years, but I've never tried it in person.
Many thanks to the Association for Baha'i
Studies in Africa and the course tutors for giving us all this opportunity.

Here is a short introduction of myself!
My name is Mersede Taherzadeh. I was born in Iran and have lived in Turkey,
Italy, United Kingdom and Malawi. For
the last six years I have been living in Zimbabwe. I am married and have five children.
I am taking the course on the Century of
Light to understand better this document and also to be able to make use of it
in my teaching work.
Thank you very much for giving me such an
opportunity!
With loving greetings,

From Robert Sarracino:
Hi,
I'm Robert Sarracino. I'm from the United States originally and have
been living in Johannesburg for the past 15 years. I've been a Baha'i since
1968.
I have a Ph.D. in physics (General Relativity) from the University of
Victoria, in Canada, but am currently making my living as a consulting
engineer (!), working at the Centre of
Material and Process Synthesis at Wits University. I have a keen interest in Science and Religion, and in the
role and influence of religion in
history.
This work, The Century of Light, is, of
course, a history of the Twentieth Century from a Baha'i perspective. Together with some of the seminal works
of the Guardian of the Baha'i Faith written
in the first half of the century, it may well serve as a model for future
approaches to history.

My Name is Tshepo Baughan from Johannesburg,

I hope to learn a lot from this course, and
develop my capacity of learning and understanding the teachings of our faith.
God willing that capacity will bear
fruits that will be of benefit to humankind.

From Belinda:
Allah'u'Abha
My name is Belinda as seen in my e-mail
address. I live in Gatineau, Quebec,
Canada, which is just across the Ottawa River from the
nation's capitol, Ottawa.
I have been a Baha'i since 1956 and first
learned of the Faith by visiting the Chicago Temple in 1954. My husband and I have done
homefront pioneering twice and served on
Assemblies and currently on the Feast & Holy Day Committee for our newly
amalgamated and
enlarged community.
My occupation currently is as a
bookseller. Long ago I taught History
and Geography at the High School level.
Working in a bookstore is
much more fun.
My friend, Dawn Weyers, got me involved in
the course last year on the Iqan and told me about this one. I am deeply thrilled by the
renewal of our world wide community and the
newly awakened culture of learning. Ruhi, Devotionals and the other elements of
our 5 Year Plan are a
wonderful banquet Feast or better yet a great
ocean in which to plunge.
My husband and I are planning to come to
South Africa on a visit to our friend, Dawn, and her husband, Robert, next year
in May/June so
we may meet some of you then. In'sha'llah!
here's to learning !!

From Rouzeh Eghtessadi:
Allah'uabha
Thank you for offering this opportunity to
explore the significant relevance of our beloved Faith within the diverse
contexts of our world today.
My name is Rouzeh Eghtessadi,
Azaerbayjani-Persian by descent, born
in Tanzania, and currently pioneering in Zimbabwe. My professional pursuit has
been physiotherapy and later on I specialised in the field of public health. I
currently practice the latter and lecture at the medical school in Zimbabwe.
As major focus of my daily activity pivots
around gender, human rights and HIV/AIDS issues in the perspective of
development and poverty reduction, I zealously look forward to this course as a
consolidation of my understanding of the Cause. I am confident that the
anticipated in-depth study of "Century of Light" would be of
tremendous value in enhancing my self-confidence with regard to my teaching
endeavours, particularly as my professional and social environment continually
presents me with challenges regarding the significance of this Revelation in
this era.
I am excited that this is my first
long-distance learning experience, and hope I can uphold the necessary
discipline to carry it through....and share its valuable content with other
friends
thank you again.........

From Charnmaine January:
To all the fellow students in the Course - Century
of Light
It was wonderful to read the warm
introductions which were put forward. Everything in terms of what motivates one
to do a course such as this
has been mentioned very eloquently. The
course whets the spiritual appetite to experience the love and knowledge of God
as brought to us
through the revelation of Baha'u'llah and the
opportunity to drink deep has come timeously. Although the first read of the
book was enormously
thrilling, the possibility of facilitating a
study on the book was declines, due to mainly two reasons. The first being that
Ruhi tutoring
seemed to be more critical at the time and
secondly the range and depth of the material to be presented required a close
study before
facilitation. A reason for studying this
course would be to share in the joy of sharing it with others at a later date.
Thank you SOOOOO very
much to ABS and Wilmette.
Background - Student Development Practioner,
UCT. Born - Cape Town
South Africa - Married and raising a son on
"home" soil. Third generation Baha'i.
Kind regards

Dear all, Allah'u'Abha.
My name is Golara Khayltash, and i'm
currently a student at Wits, in Jo'burg.
I have read the Century of Light, and really enjoyed it, but feel that
justice can be done to such a book only by studying it in a group, so i'm
really looking forward to this course, and am grateful to the ABS for
organizing it.
With warmest regards,

From Edmund Hall:
Dear
friends
I am starting my intro with one of my
favorite quotes about art from outside the writings of the Faith. I am increasingly
being called upon to explain the motivation behind my art work and feel that
studying Century of Light will not only help me define these impulses,
organize loosely related ideas and of
course generate new creative endeavors.
Warmest Greetings
edmund
" Art is first and foremost a condition of the
soul" Marc Chagall
Therefore I feel works produced by the artist
reflect his or her "spiritual temperature " as it were. Is the soul
in good health or afflicted? What struggle (social, personal or religious) is
reflected in the artists work? Does art transcend life or merely imitate it?
Has the heart together with technique and
initial inspiration prevailed and imbued the art work with spirit?
Today with the resources of both east and
west are available to help the artist bring forth from the invisible plane
works inspired by the intersection of their innermost being with the material
world. This is the grist of my creative mill. Whatever the subject the
resulting image is a self portrait, changing, reflecting the various phases of
growth in my development.
From Intersections exhibition brochure, '
Edmund Hall is a painter from Port Alfred who is involved in both Western and
Middle Eastern philosophies. His works often resonate at points or
intersections during his creative output giving rise to moments of spiritual
realization between the material and the metaphysical. His works tend to become
either poems or hymns. He works in a number of painting and drawing mediums.'

From Enayat and Iran Sohaili:
Allah'u'Abha to all concerned
Some time back when I read the Century of
Light, often I wished I was able to discuss this book with some friends. But never got around to do so. Thanks to the ABS, now most of us who wanted
to discuss this book with others have
been given the opportunity to study and understand it in depth and make use of
it in our teaching work. Thank you
ABS.
When we were doing the course on Iqhan with
Farzin Aghdasi, both Iran and I used to discuss and study the course
together. Once again this course is
going to give us the opportunity to do the same.
My name is Enayat Sohaili and have been in
Africa since 1953. Before coming to
Zimbabwe in 1961, I was a pioneer in Malawi.
At present I live with my wife, Iran in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
Warmest Baha'i greetings
Enayat Sohaili
Hi, I am Iran Sohaili and live in Zimbabwe, Bulawayo, I am a mother of
four grown up children. I am pioneering in this country since 1961. My husband Enayat
and I will be studying the course together and we hope we will be able to keep
up with the readings. Thank you for all the hard work you are putting in
dearest Sylvia. Regards to all, Iran.

sure, will help me in my teaching work.

From Farzin Aghdasi:
My name is Farzin Aghdasi, and I will serve
you in this course as your
web-servant. Unfortunately my time
commitments, at work and to the work
of
the Training Institute, do not allow me to be
a fully participating
student in this course, but I can not
conscionably remain aloof from
such a
wonderful online course. Hopefully I will get
a chance or two to
contribute.
I live in California with my wife, Fariba,
and our two children, Bayan
and Carmel. If it is any consolation we live
in the interior valley away
from
the coast, and away from centers of large
Baha'i populations, much
hotter climate than our former homes in
either Harare or Midrand, still
our
community of Clovis does have an Assembly, so
this does not even
qualify as home front pioneering. Our cluster
is category C, pushing to
become C+ or B!

From Aazam Binazir:
Allá'u'Abhá dear friends
My name is Aazam Binazir. I was born in Iran and later lived, studied
and got married in the U.S. In 1981 Mike and I moved to South Africa
and settled in Mafikeng and have two grown up
children named Aryan and
Nahaal.
By profession I am an IT system architect. I have tried to read
The Century of Light twice but each time half
way. Though the volume is
not large and it seems to be an easy reading,
the content requires more
in-depth pondering. So each time I felt like going back and try to go
through it more slowly and deeply. I now find this the best opportunity
for Mike and I to read it again bit by bit ,
listen to the group
discussions and grasp the content
better. My thanks to the organizers
of this course for their time and dedication
and best wishes to all
participants in their endeavour.

From Debbie Dadgar:
Dear friends,
I am a psychologist in private practice in
Swaziland where I have lived
for the past twenty three years. I became a
Baha'i in New York in 1969
and went pioneering to Switzerland in 1971
and to Zaire (Congo) in 1975
before coming to Swaziland.
I am taking the course to gain more insights so as to be able to
respond to the opportunities of these
"precious days". I find the
generality of people
so lost and forlorn about the condition of
the world and really don't
know where to turn. Many are so thirsty for
spirituality and the Baha'i
Community, which includes myself need to be
ready to respond to this. I
am so pleased to have the opportunity to take
the course and gain
assistance from those who are more
knowledgeable than myself, to
navigate through the book and glean the
needed insights for this
challenge.

Introduction:
My name is Alyssa Wong (I also go by the name

of Service in Banani. I am taking this course because it seemed like an
interesting subject to study and because I am eager to get back into studying
Bahá'í courses, as I had little time during High School to do so. I hope to
gain a greater insight as to why events in the 20th Century were so
significant, other than just historically. I'd like to get a better
understanding of them and how they relate to the Faith in hopes that this will
help me in explaining and teaching the faith to others. (I've met quite a few people
- mostly when I studied European history - who question the existence of God
based on the horrors of the past century. It would be nice to be able to relate
their reasons not to believe in God to the advancement of the Bahá'í Faith).

I'm taking the course,
because I have taken several courses with the Wilmette Institute, and I have
found them so informative and deeply entrenched with details that I had never
known before. It definitely helped me to effectively study and understand the
mystery behind some the meanings of the Sacred Writings. It has helped open my
eyes so much. I just started reading Century of Light quite recently, and then
I heard about this course, so I thought it would be another great opportunity
for me to broaden my
scope and understanding of
its inner meaning.

Dear friends:
My name is Thozi Nomvete. I
live in Umtata. I work at the University of Transkei, which is set to merge
with two technikons soon. Its new name will be "Walter Sisulu University
for Science, Technology and Rural Development." In short, it will be known
as Walter Sisulu University. I came to the eastern part of the Eastern Cape in
1983. I have been at the same place ever since. I have married again to a
lovely lady called Patsy Nolusapho Nomvete, nee Patsy Gailey. The date of
marriage was June 14, 2003.
Patsy was featured on South
African national television when she arrived from Georgia in the US. She was
interviewed on a programme called "All You Need is Love." She
mentioned the Faith many times, and indicated that it was the reason why we met
and why we were about to get married. Everywhere we go, when people recognize
us, they wave hands and smile: Patsy feels so welcome here.
Patsy gave a talk last week
Thursday, 4 September, and that talk is on the web. The address is:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/makoti.
When you enter the home page you will be prompted to enrol as a member
of the web group. Once a member you will be able to access the web features of
the group thus enabling you to download her speech under the section called
"Files."
I look forward to studying
the Century of Light with all of you friends who have had such illustrious
service to this wonderful Cause of God.
Love to all of you, dear friends, and may God bless your efforts
wherever you are. And, like the Hand of the Cause Bill Sears said: "Please
remember me in your prayers." And
so, Please remember me and Patsy in your prayers, so that we can continue to
advance the Cause while we have a fleeting moment here on this perishable Earth.
Love,
Thozi Nomvete
