From Sunrise to Sunset
Washington, DC
Note that site #43 is in Alexandria at the St. Paul’s cemetery. Directions
are below via either the text description or via the map with the site
circled.
The tour of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá’s several visits to Washington DC in 1912 will include over 40
locations associated with the Master's visits on Sunday, May 13, 2012 from sunrise to
sunset. The highlight of the tour will be a public display of the DC Baha'i archive's items
associated with the visit of the Master to Washington 100 years ago, including the
recreation of a 1912 parlor using furniture used by 'Abdu'l-Baha.

Beta of the Online Tour is up at
http://www.dcbahaitour.org/
! This is not the complete
tour and it is still being updated. The site is designed for mobile access and may not
render correctly on a desktop computer.
A NOTE ABOUT WALKING:
Participants are strongly encouraged to wear comfortable foot wear and bring plenty of
water, as May in Washington can already be hot and humid, and to visit every site would
take a great deal of athleticism. It is advised that individuals carefully plan which sites
they can visit according to their own capacities. Half of the sites are near Dupont Circle
in Washington DC and walking in that neighborhood would provide a good tour
experience with a minimum of exertion.
REGISTRATION: (Please note that this is a free event and there are no charges for
taking the tour) No registration is required for the tour, however, registration is required
for the Saturday commemoration.
Questions about the tour can be directed through the
Contact Us
form.
LOGISTICS:
A map will be mailed to everyone who registers for the Saturday event. Also the DC
Baha'i Center will have maps for anyone to pick up on Sunday beginning at 10 AM and
will be available for download here shortly. With the map in hand you can visit the
different address points and then look up the Audio number for that site, and any cell
phone can listen to an audio tour will provide a one minute description of each site,
which any cell phone can call.
For an enhanced experience any phone with a webbrowser, feature phones, android
phones, tablets, iOS phones with a data plan, can visit
http://www.dcbahaitour.org/
which will provide directions from whereever you are, to
any of the sites - by car, by foot or by metro instantaneously, dynamically. In addition
numerous photos and additional text will enhance the Audio experience at each site.
Finally, some of the sites, as will be indicated on the map and on the web application,
will have hosts available at specific times to welcome you to the location and help make
you feel at home. Also, certain sites will have specific hours when they will be open for
visitation. Please note it is a Sunday, and if you visit a house of worship, be respectful of
the services ongoing.

Alternative directions: Welcome to St. Paul' Cemetery, past 1500 Wilkes Street turn south onto
Hamilton Lane marked by the sign "Presbyterian Cemetery" and "St. Paul's Cemetery", and proceed
down the lane until you see "St. Paul's Cemetery" again close to the end of the lane on the eastern side
(You will have gone too far down Wilkes if you reach the National Cemetery). Upon entering you will
look for the tall iron fenced plot with a stauesque stone angel to serve as a visual marker to find the
gravesite visited by the Master in November 1912 of Julius Adolph De Lagnel who was the recently
(June 3 1912) husband of Mrs. J. C. de Lagnel a DC Baha'i community member. Since the Master's
visit Mrs. J. C. De Lagnel has also passed on and is burried alongside the spot visited by the Master
with a beautiful testionmy to her Faith inscribed upon her grand grave stone. The November visit was
made in a Carriage along with Mr. Charles Mason Remey, Mrs. Nliza A. Duffield and Mrs. Caludei
Stuart Coles. Mr. De Lagnel was a US Army officer beginning in 1847, and joined civil war on the
side of the enslavers, and after the war ran a pacific Steamship service. No doubt Mrs. J. C. de Lagnel
was one of the students of Mirza Abu'l-Fad'l as upon his passing she held a memorial in her spacious
parlor filled with the Baha'is of Washington DC. St. Paul's Cemetery itself was built in 1817 located at
228 South Pitt Street in Alexandria.
Building's 1912 Continuity: Grave remains as 'Abdu'l-Baha visited it.

Then Proceed along Wilkes street per the instructions above to Hamilton Lane.
